Once they got to Kit’s, Alex unloaded the bags onto the kitchen table while Kit gathered some plates. He’d even run next door to scrounge up two IPAs from his mini-fridge to go with the food. “Thai chili wings,” he read on one foam container. He read the others. “Honey barbecue wings. Sriracha. How many different kinds did you order?”

She walked up next to him and peeked in the bag. “That should be all the wings.”

Meaning there was more food. Out of the other bag, he proceeded to pull out French fries, cheese dip, and something chocolate dripping with caramel sauce. “What’s this?”

“Double chocolate brownie bomb,” she said. “They didn’t forget the ice cream, did they?”

He pulled out a container of ice cream, which she stashed in the freezer. “Have you ever had one of those?” she asked.

“Can’t say I have.”

She flashed a mischievous smile. “Well, you won’t be the same person after you do.”

He wasn’t the same person since the day he’d first encountered her in front of the old house. Every day since he’d told himself that spending time with her would prove that she was just a fantasy, something his mind had somehow gotten stuck on, like a song that plays over and over in your head. But he’d never met anyone like her. Kind, beautiful, brave, and a wing aficionado to boot.

A few minutes later, they were settled on the patio, the containers of food spread out before them. A light breeze blew in from the ocean, the waves calmly lapping to shore in the distance.

He tried every wing flavor. Kit made sure he did.

“So, what’s your favorite?” she asked with enthusiasm.

“Well, I know you’re into the Thai ones, but I vote for the sriracha.”

“I like that one too,” she said, licking her fingers.

The urge to kiss her hit him hard, and he forced himself to look away. “Do you always get this excited about wings?” he asked instead.

“Well, yes.” She grabbed another napkin from a pile. “But part of the fun is getting other people addicted.”

They sat there eating and watching the sun set as couples and dogs walked along the beach, a citronella candle flickering in the middle of the wrought-iron table.

“For the record,” she said, wiping her fingers and tossing the napkin on her plate, “I don’t feel bad about catching Bryan with someone else. It was just my first date and I’m waaay too comfortable in my own skin to let something like this get to me. I would never take that personally.”

“That’s good,” he said, taking a swig of beer and watching her barrel through some French fries.

She stopped eating and looked at him. “I’m lying. It hurt. But not that bad.” She grinned and picked up another fry and her beer. “Save room for dessert.” She pointed the bottle toward the double-chocolate-whatever-it-was. “Are you one of those people who doesn’t eat dessert? Because if you’re not going to help me eat this, I don’t want to be judged.”

“I have a big weakness for chocolate.
